Episode 34, “Everyone’s Gathered! Usopp Speaks the Truth About Nami!”, is the moment where the Straw Hats unite again, Nami’s “betrayal” is exposed as an act, and Nojiko steps in to finally explain why Nami is working under Arlong.
Nami Says She Killed Usopp, Luffy Refuses To Leave
The episode opens with Johnny telling Zoro, Sanji, and Luffy that he saw Nami kill Usopp. The news shocks everyone, but Luffy refuses to accept it. For him, Nami isn’t someone who would kill a crewmate.
Then Nami herself appears. She coldly confirms that she killed Usopp and tells them to stay out of her business and leave Cocoyashi without her. She insists that she was never their ally and that they have nothing to do with what’s happening in this village.
Instead of arguing, Luffy lies down in the middle of the road and goes to sleep. It looks silly, but it’s Luffy’s way of saying, “I’m not leaving this island without you.” Johnny and Yosaku decide that this is too dangerous and choose to leave, but Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji stay behind on the island, waiting for Nami.
The Marines Arrive… And Are Completely Destroyed
Meanwhile, at Arlong Park, a Marine warship from the 77th Branch arrives, led by Captain Pudding Pudding. Their official mission is to capture Arlong and rescue the survivors suffering under his rule.
Nojiko and the young boy Chabo watch from the shore, full of hope that this is finally the end of Arlong’s tyranny. At first, Arlong sends someone to bribe the Marines, but they respond by firing a cannonball. Arlong casually catches it with his teeth and crushes it, then declares them enemies.
His officers step up:
Chew boards the Marine ship and shoots Pudding Pudding in the chest mid-speech.
Kuroobi rips the rudder off the warship.
Hatchan uses the reef to create a whirlpool under the ship, sinking it completely.
In just a few moments, the entire Marine force is wiped out. Chabo falls to his knees in despair, realizing even the Marines are helpless against Arlong’s crew.
Nami Breaks Down At Home
After this, Nami sneaks into Nojiko’s house and starts trashing the room, finally letting out the anger and stress she’s been hiding. When Nojiko returns, they talk about the Straw Hats, and Nami can’t stop remembering the time she spent with them.
She recalls small, warm moments:
Playing cards with Luffy and Usopp.
Working together to fix a leak in the Going Merry.
Traveling as part of the crew, joking and laughing like a real family.
The more she tries to erase them from her mind, the more these memories come back. Nami admits that, for a while, she even forgot the cruel fate she bears and honestly felt like she wanted to keep sailing with them if it were possible. The guilt of pushing them away and the weight of protecting Cocoyashi Village crush her, and she eventually collapses and falls asleep, completely exhausted.
Usopp Returns Alive And Tells The Truth
Back near Luffy, Zoro and Sanji sit beside their sleeping captain, arguing about Nami and Usopp. The conversation becomes heated and silly, leading to a physical clash between them.
Right then, Usopp appears, very much alive, trying to speak—but he ends up with his face smashed between Zoro and Sanji as they collide. After they calm down, he finally explains what really happened:
Nami did not kill him.
She stabbed the back of her own hand to create blood.
She used smoke and the chaos to let Usopp fake his death and escape, because Arlong would have killed him otherwise.
Luffy wakes up and is shocked but relieved that Usopp is alive. Sanji jokes that he was alive “until we crushed his skull,” adding some humor in the middle of the serious situation. Now the Straw Hats understand that Nami is still protecting them, even if she’s acting like a traitor.
Nojiko Offers Nami’s Past, Luffy’s Answer
The crew wonders why Nami would work with Arlong in the first place and what kind of deal she made. At that moment, Nojiko appears behind them and tells them not to be involved with their village anymore.
She offers to tell them about Cocoyashi’s past and Nami’s real reasons for joining Arlong. Luffy gets up and says he doesn’t care about Nami’s past, then walks away. He doesn’t say this out of coldness, but because he already accepts Nami as she is now and just wants her back as his navigator.
Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp stay to listen to Nojiko’s story—though Zoro hilariously falls asleep as she begins. This sets up the emotional flashback episodes that reveal Bellemere, the sisters’ childhood, and the terrible deal Nami made with Arlong.
