Episode 29, “The Conclusion of the Deadly Battle! A Spear of Blind Determination!”, acts as both the true finish to Luffy vs Don Krieg and the emotional setup for Sanji’s departure from Baratie. It closes the fight, shows the fallout, and gently turns the story toward Nami and the next destination.
Final Moments Of Luffy vs Don Krieg
Although Episode 28 delivered the big turning point, Episode 29 wraps up the last beats of the fight. Don Krieg tries one final desperate move by trapping Luffy under an iron net and dragging him down toward the sea, hoping to drown him.
Luffy, even while restrained, refuses to give up. He stretches and manages to free his limbs enough to grab Krieg’s face with his feet and slam him into Baratie’s fin with a powerful Gomu Gomu no Ozuchi (Gum-Gum Mallet), knocking him out and ending the battle for good.
With their captain beaten and their weapons destroyed, Krieg’s remaining men have no choice but to retreat. The terror of Don Krieg in East Blue is finally over, and Baratie is saved.
Baratie Repairs And Sanji’s Frustration
After the fight, the restaurant crew starts repairing the damage to Baratie. Luffy rests up after nearly drowning, and when he wakes, he learns that his efforts cleared his debt for smashing the restaurant’s front back in Episode 20.
Meanwhile, Sanji goes back to cooking like normal, but something feels different. The staff—Patty, Carne, and the other cooks—taste Sanji’s soup and start harshly criticizing it, saying it’s bad and that he still has a long way to go.
Sanji gets pissed off. He’s sure he cooked it well, and their insults cut deeper than he expects. He storms out, angry and confused, thinking they don’t value him as a chef.
What he doesn’t know is that it’s all an act.

Zeff’s Real Feelings And Sanji’s Decision
After Sanji storms off, Luffy and the others overhear Zeff and the cooks talking honestly. They admit that Sanji’s soup was actually delicious and that his cooking is already top-tier. Zeff says out loud that he doesn’t want Sanji to stay stuck at Baratie forever—he wants him to go to sea, find the All Blue, and chase his dream.
This whole harsh-criticism act was a setup. By pretending his cooking wasn’t good enough, Zeff and the others hoped to push Sanji away, making it easier for him to leave without being weighed down by guilt or obligation.
Sanji hears this and remembers their shared past on the deserted island:
Zeff giving him all the food.
Zeff sacrificing his leg.
Their promise to build Baratie and never let anyone go hungry.
Realizing that Zeff is now trying to free him, Sanji quietly begins to accept what he truly wants: to leave with Luffy and pursue the All Blue.
Yosaku Returns With News About Nami
Just as this emotional shift happens, Yosaku arrives at Baratie riding on a giant panda shark—classic comedic entrance. He brings urgent news: he followed Nami after she stole the Going Merry, and he’s discovered that she’s heading toward a very dangerous island controlled by a notorious pirate crew.
He doesn’t know all the details, but the destination is clear enough: the path is leading toward Arlong Park. For Luffy, this means two things:
He needs a full crew—including a cook.
He needs to set out quickly to catch up with Nami and get his ship back.
Episode 29 sets everything up emotionally and logistically: Baratie is safe, Luffy is ready to leave, Sanji knows Zeff supports his dream, and a new threat—Nami’s mysterious destination—is waiting just over the horizon.
