One Piece Episode 20, “Famous Cook! Sanji of the Sea Restaurant!”, kicks off the Baratie arc as the Straw Hats search for a cook and crash—literally—into the floating restaurant where Sanji works. It introduces Baratie, Zeff, and Sanji’s personality as a proud chef who fights with his legs and lives by a strict respect for food.
Johnny, Yosaku, And The Need For A Cook
Right after Zoro’s backstory, a cannonball test from Luffy and Usopp accidentally hits the small boat of bounty hunters Johnny and Yosaku. Johnny boards the Going Merry furious, but once the misunderstanding is cleared, we learn they’re old bounty-hunter partners of Zoro who sometimes worked together catching pirates.
During the conversation, Nami points out that a real pirate crew needs a cook if they want to survive long voyages without getting sick or weak. Johnny and Yosaku mention Baratie, a famous floating restaurant on the sea known for its incredible food and tough chef “pirates,” so the Straw Hats change course to head there and recruit a cook.
First Look At Baratie And Fullbody’s Entrance
The Going Merry arrives at Baratie, a huge, brightly colored ship built like a multi-level restaurant with a fish-shaped bow, floating alone in the middle of the ocean. At the same time, Marine Lieutenant “Iron Fist” Fullbody approaches with a Navy ship, bragging to his date about his status and his reservation at this exclusive sea restaurant.
Fullbody orders a cannon warning shot near the Going Merry to show off, but Luffy uses his rubber powers to deflect the cannonball. The deflected shot slams straight into Baratie’s front, smashing part of the restaurant and immediately making the Straw Hats look like the ones who attacked it.

Baratie is the arc that makes a lot of fans fall in love with One Piece’s world-building—floating restaurants, suit-wearing pirate chefs, and insane food fights in the middle of the sea. If you like turning that vibe into real-life stuff on your desk or in your room, the Crunchyroll Store is a great place to check out official anime merch. You can find licensed One Piece figures, Straw Hat and Baratie-era shirts, and kitchen-themed items inspired by anime cooks so your setup starts to feel a little like the Baratie galley or the Going Merry’s kitchen, all with high-quality, legit designs.
Luffy’s Debt And Zeff’s Judgment
After the impact, Baratie’s staff drag Luffy inside and demand to know who’s paying for the damage. The restaurant’s owner and head chef, “Red-Leg” Zeff—a former pirate with a tall chef’s hat and one leg—appears and is furious that his beloved ship-restaurant has been hit.
Since Luffy has no money, Zeff decides the only solution is labor: Luffy will work at Baratie for one full year to pay off the repairs. Luffy protests because he needs to keep sailing to find crewmates and reach the Grand Line, but Zeff is immovable and treats it as both repayment and a lesson in taking responsibility for his actions.
Sanji, The Kicking Cook
We then meet Sanji, the blond sous chef in a black suit who is currently forced to act as a waiter because the actual waiters have quit or run off. He moves smoothly through the dining hall with a cigarette in his mouth, serving dishes while keeping an eye on customers and food quality.
A rude Marine customer (Fullbody) tries to send back perfect food and show off to his date, acting like he’s above the staff. Sanji first embarrasses him verbally by explaining his bad wine pairing, then when Fullbody keeps being a jerk, Sanji uses powerful spinning kicks to beat him down, never once using his hands so he doesn’t risk damaging them for cooking. This shows Sanji’s code: respect food and feed the hungry, but humiliate those who insult the kitchen.
Luffy Sets His Eyes On A Cook
Watching from the side, Luffy is instantly impressed: Sanji is both an amazing cook and a strong fighter who uses only kicks. Luffy decides on the spot that Sanji is the perfect cook for his pirate crew and starts telling him to join, even though Sanji has no intention of leaving Baratie and Zeff has just “hired” Luffy as a busboy to pay off his debt.
Episode 20 ends with Luffy stuck working at Baratie, Sanji clashing with rude customers, Zeff watching over everything like a strict pirate-chef father, and the Straw Hats lingering at the floating restaurant—setting up the bigger conflicts of the Baratie arc and Sanji’s deeper backstory.
