Episode 28, “I Won’t Die! Fierce Battle, Luffy vs. Krieg!”, is the explosive conclusion of the Baratie battle. It settles everything between Luffy and Don Krieg: weapons and armor on one side, unbreakable will on the other.
Gin’s Sacrifice And The Aftermath Of MH5
The episode continues from the poison gas chaos. Don Krieg’s MH5 gas bomb has already been fired, and the battlefield is filled with toxic smoke. Luffy had given the gas masks to Sanji and Gin, leaving himself exposed. Gin, unable to accept that, puts his own mask on Luffy and chooses to breathe the poison instead.
Now, at the start of Episode 28, Gin is collapsing, his lungs burning from the toxin. Zeff and the Baratie cooks drag him inside to try to treat him, while Krieg coldly dismisses him as a failure. Before he goes, Gin tells Luffy and Sanji that he wants them to meet again one day on the Grand Line, where real pirates test their dreams against the world.
Gin’s body is broken, but his heart is finally free from Krieg’s control. His choice becomes the moral turning point of the battle.
Weapons, Armor, And The Kenzan Mantle
With Gin out of the way, Don Krieg focuses completely on Luffy. He still believes that a captain’s strength comes from weapons, numbers, and fear, not from protecting his crew.
Krieg activates one of his signature tools: the Kenzan Mantle, a spiked cloak covered in sharp blades. Wrapped in this armor, he turns himself into a walking wall of spikes, confident that any close-range attack will shred his opponent before landing.
Luffy doesn’t care. Instead of backing off, he charges straight in. Even as the spikes tear into his body, he forces his way through the Kenzan Mantle and lands a powerful punch right to Krieg’s face, cracking both his armor and his arrogance. Zeff and the cooks watch, realizing that Luffy is the complete opposite of Krieg: a captain who takes damage to protect others, rather than letting others take damage for him.

Krieg’s Ultimate Spear: Daisenso
Krieg refuses to accept that his armor can be broken. He brings out his ultimate weapon, the Daisenso, a massive spear formed from his armor that explodes with every impact. Each swing sends out shockwaves and blasts, turning the Baratie’s deck into a dangerous minefield.
He attacks Luffy again and again. Every time the spear hits, a violent explosion goes off at close range, burning and battering Luffy’s body. But Luffy keeps pushing forward, refusing to dodge or run. He literally punches the spearhead repeatedly, eating multiple explosions in a row until the Daisenso finally cracks and breaks apart.
By this point, Luffy is exhausted, bruised, and barely standing—but he’s still smiling that stubborn, fearless smile that infuriates Krieg.
The Final Blow And The End Of Don Krieg’s Ambition
With his cloak broken and his ultimate spear destroyed, Don Krieg is shaken but still not ready to admit defeat. He tries a last desperate trick, using an iron net and leftover weapons to trap Luffy.
Luffy won’t let this be another trick-based win for Krieg. Summoning the last of his strength, he launches a powerful finishing attack, slamming Krieg into the Baratie’s side structure and shattering his will to fight. Krieg struggles to get up, but he’s finished.
The final word doesn’t even come from Luffy—it comes from Gin. Despite being poisoned and barely able to stand, Gin knocks Krieg out and tells his captain and crew that the fight is over. He orders the remaining Krieg Pirates to retreat. Their once-mighty armada leaves East Blue in a damaged ship, their dreams of conquering the Grand Line crushed.
Baratie is still standing.
Respect Earned, Paths Decided
With Krieg defeated, the Baratie cooks finally understand what kind of people they’ve been dealing with. They see Luffy as a true pirate captain, someone willing to suffer himself to protect others, and they see Sanji as more than just a flirty waiter—he’s a fighter with a dream and a heart shaped by Zeff’s sacrifice.
Zeff thanks Luffy in his own rough way, and Gin’s final request—that they all meet again on the Grand Line—hangs in the air like a promise for the future.
This episode closes the combat side of the Baratie arc and sets up the next steps:
Baratie survives as a restaurant where no one goes hungry.
Don Krieg’s era of terror in East Blue is effectively over.
Sanji now has a clear path to leave Baratie and join Luffy’s crew, taking his All Blue dream out to sea.
