Episode 26, “Zeff and Sanji’s Dream! The Illusory All Blue!”, slows the Baratie chaos down to tell one of the most emotional backstories in early One Piece. We finally see why Sanji respects Zeff so much, why he never lets anyone go hungry, and where his dream of the All Blue truly comes from.
Ship Attack And The Storm That Changed Sanji’s Life
Years before Baratie, a young Sanji is working as an apprentice cook on a passenger ship. He already has a dream: to find the All Blue, the legendary sea where all the world’s fish gather and a cook can find ingredients from every ocean in one place.
One day, the ship is attacked by the infamous pirate Red Leg Zeff and his crew. Before either side can finish their battle, a violent storm slams into them. Massive waves crush the ship, and in the chaos, Sanji is swept overboard. Zeff dives in after him, refusing to let the boy die out at sea.
They end up washed ashore on a small, rocky deserted island, with wreckage around them and almost no supplies. It’s here that the bond between them is forged.
Two Sacks Of Food And A Cruel Reality
On the island, Zeff and Sanji recover what little food they can. Zeff hands Sanji a small sack of rations and keeps a much larger one for himself. To Sanji, this looks unfair. He assumes Zeff is a selfish pirate who doesn’t care if a kid starves, even though they’re both stuck in the same nightmare.
Zeff tells Sanji to stay on his side of the rock and keep watch for ships, while he watches the other side. Time passes. Sanji quickly runs out of food and is forced to endure hunger, rain, and exhaustion.
Meanwhile, every time Sanji glances at Zeff, he sees the big sack and imagines it full of food. His resentment grows along with his hunger. Still, he refuses to die because he hasn’t seen the All Blue yet.
Days turn into weeks. Eventually, the hunger becomes unbearable. Sanji decides he has nothing left to lose. He grabs a broken piece of wood, storms over to Zeff’s side of the island, and attacks him, determined to steal the “big” sack.
Zeff’s Sacrifice And The Origin Of Baratie
When Sanji finally tears open the large sack, he gets the shock of his life. Inside there is no food at all—only treasure and valuables from Zeff’s former pirate life. At the same time, he really looks at Zeff and realizes the old man has lost one leg and is barely standing.
The truth becomes clear:
Zeff gave all the real food to Sanji in the small bag.
Zeff survived by eating nothing, enduring his own hunger in silence.
He sacrificed his leg and his strength to save Sanji and give him a chance to keep chasing his dream of the All Blue.
Sanji breaks down, crying and apologizing. Zeff explains that he shares the same dream—he also believed in the All Blue, and he wants Sanji to live long enough to find it.
They decide that if they are ever rescued, they will open a restaurant on the sea, a place where no one will ever starve again. That promise becomes the foundation of Baratie, the floating restaurant we see in the present.

Back To Baratie: Sanji’s Dream Is Bigger Than Himself
Back in the present, the Baratie is still damaged from the ongoing conflict with Don Krieg and his pirates, and Luffy is in the middle of the struggle to protect the restaurant. While the battle rages, Sanji and Zeff’s shared past explains everything about Sanji’s behavior:
Why he never refuses food to someone who’s starving (even an enemy like Gin).
Why he’s willing to put his life on the line to protect Zeff and the Baratie.
Why the All Blue isn’t just a fantasy to him, but a promise he intends to keep for both of them.
Zeff, now older and retired from piracy, pushes Sanji to stop holding himself back in the small world of the restaurant and to go chase his dream properly. This sets up the emotional foundation for Sanji eventually leaving Baratie and joining Luffy’s crew as the Straw Hats’ cook.
Episode 26 ends not with a big punch, but with a big emotional impact. We understand Sanji’s heart, Zeff’s sacrifice, and why the words “All Blue” mean everything to them.
