Ghin Returns With A Monster Behind Him
After being saved from starvation by Sanji earlier, Ghin returns to the Baratie—but this time, he’s not alone. At his side is his captain, Don Krieg, the man known as the ruthless leader of the strongest pirate fleet in the East Blue. Their ship outside looks wrecked, and the remaining crew are starving, barely clinging to life after a disastrous trip to the Grand Line.
Krieg enters the restaurant half-carried by Ghin and actually begs for food, collapsing in front of the staff and customers. The cooks and guests immediately recognize his name and start shouting about his crimes, warning that he’s a cold, calculating pirate who lives on deception and dirty tricks. To them, this is karma. To Sanji, it’s something else.
Sanji’s Rule: Feed The Hungry, Even The Worst Pirate
Despite every warning, Sanji steps forward. Just like he did with Ghin, he ignores Krieg’s reputation and focuses only on one thing—this man is starving. The other cooks try to stop him, reminding him that Don Krieg pretended to be a Marine in the past, used fake flags, and has always relied on tricks to win fights.
But Sanji’s belief is unshakable. He gives Krieg a plate of food, fully aware this might backfire. His ideal is simple: no one should die from hunger, not even someone as cruel as Don Krieg. This moment shows how deep Sanji’s values go and hints that his obsession with feeding the hungry comes from personal pain and experience.
Krieg eats. Energy comes back into his eyes. His posture straightens. And the moment he’s restored…
The Betrayal: Baratie Becomes A Target
…Don Krieg shows his true nature. As soon as he’s full, he betrays Sanji’s kindness. He stands up, attacks, and loudly declares that he’s going to take over the Baratie.
Krieg demands:
Enough food to restore his remaining 100 men.
Control of the Baratie as his new flagship, since his original fleet was destroyed in the Grand Line.
That the cooks hand over their ship and prepare to be thrown out or killed if they resist.
The cooks are furious. This restaurant is their home, their pride, and their second chance at life after piracy. They’re ready to fight to the end. But Zeff, the old captain and head chef, makes a surprising move.

Zeff’s Strategy: Feed The Enemy, Prepare For War
Instead of refusing Krieg, Zeff tells the cooks to give him a sack of food. It seems insane on the surface, but Zeff has sailed the Grand Line—he knows what starving pirates with nothing to lose can do. Feeding them doesn’t mean surrender; it means avoiding immediate slaughter and buying time.
While Krieg’s crew gets their chance to eat, Zeff quietly orders his chefs to prepare for battle. That’s when we see Baratie’s hidden form. The restaurant activates its battle fins, armored plates that rise up around the ship, turning the peaceful dining hall into a fortified combat zone.
Baratie isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a warship disguised as a fancy place to eat.
Cooks vs. Krieg Pirates: First Clash
With food in sight and orders from their captain, the Krieg Pirates move in. A chaotic fight erupts between the pirates and the Baratie chefs, who grab weapons, kitchen tools, and anything they can use to fight. Many of these cooks are former pirates themselves, and now they battle to protect the only home they have left.
At first, the cooks struggle with the sheer number of enemies. Then Sanji joins the fight properly. He unleashes his devastating kicks, knocking enemies out while still carrying that cool, gentlemanly aura, proving he’s not just a cook in a suit—he’s a frontline fighter.
Luffy watches all this and sees everything he needs to know: Sanji is someone who feeds even the worst enemy, takes betrayal without abandoning his beliefs, and still stands up to fight. That’s exactly the kind of person Luffy wants on his crew.
The War Has Only Just Started
Episode 22 ends with the sense that this is just the opening round. Don Krieg hasn’t used his full arsenal, his hidden weapons, or his most dangerous officers yet. His betrayal has turned Baratie into a battlefield, and the Straw Hats are now locked into this conflict whether they like it or not.
For Luffy, Baratie is no longer just a place to hire a cook. It’s a test:
Can he protect his friends?
Can he stand up to a man who commands the “strongest pirate fleet” of the East Blue?
And can he convince Sanji to leave this floating restaurant behind and join him on the path to the One Piece?
