Bellemere Chooses Her Daughters Over Her Life

Arlong and his pirates reach Bellemere’s house to collect tribute while Nami and Nojiko hide nearby. Bellemere has only 100,000 berries—enough for one adult, not for herself and two children.

Genzo and the villagers beg Bellemere to pretend she lives alone, so she can pay for herself and survive while the girls stay “invisible” on paper. Instead, Bellemere proudly declares that she has two daughters, Nami and Nojiko, and pays the 100,000 berries for them, not for herself.

She tells the girls she loves them and to keep living without hatred, accepting that she will die as their mother rather than live as a stranger. Arlong coldly shoots Bellemere in front of everyone, and Nami watches her mother die, screaming and begging in one of the most painful scenes of the arc.

Nami’s Forced Deal With Arlong

After Bellemere’s death, Arlong tightens his hold on Cocoyashi Village, threatening to kill the villagers or sell Nami and Nojiko away if anyone resists. When he sees one of Nami’s maps, he is impressed by her natural talent as a cartographer.

Arlong offers a deal: Nami will join his crew as a mapmaker, and if she can bring him 100,000,000 berries, he will free Cocoyashi Village and stop demanding tribute. To protect everyone, Nami agrees, even though she is still a child and has just watched him murder her mother.

From then on, Nami becomes a pirate thief working under Arlong, stealing from pirates and hiding her money underground all over the area, spending eight years trying to reach that impossible 100 million. The villagers decide to pretend to hate her, calling her a traitor, so Arlong won’t suspect she’s doing it for them, while Genzo and the others silently support her from the shadows.

Present Day: Nezumi Steals Everything

The flashback ends and the story returns to the present. After eight long years, Nami has finally gathered almost 100,000,000 berries buried in her tangerine fields, ready to buy Cocoyashi back from Arlong.

Suddenly, Marine Captain Nezumi arrives with soldiers, claiming he received a report about stolen goods hidden nearby. They storm Nami’s field, dig up all her buried treasure, and confiscate it as government property, ignoring her desperate screams that this money is her village’s only hope. When Nojiko tries to stop them and defend Nami, she is shot and wounded, shocking the villagers.

The villagers and Nami realize that Nezumi is working with Arlong, taking a bribe to leave Arlong alone while destroying Nami’s chance to ever pay off the deal. In a single moment, her eight years of suffering, stealing, and saving are erased.

Nami Breaks Completely

Shattered, Nami runs to Arlong Park and confronts Arlong, asking if he ordered Nezumi to steal her money. Arlong laughs and acts innocent, saying he never personally touched her money and that their “deal” still technically stands—if she wants the village back, she can just start again from zero.

This cruel answer makes Nami realize the horrible truth: Arlong never planned to keep his promise, and she’s been used from the beginning. Everything she did, including betraying the Straw Hats and letting the village hate her, was based on a lie. Emotionally destroyed, she reaches the point where she can no longer carry this burden alone, setting up her famous breakdown and plea for help in the next episode and the start of Luffy vs Arlong.
