Episode 35, “Untold Past! Female Warrior Bellemere!

Episode 35, “Untold Past! Female Warrior Bellemere!”, is the first half of Nami’s heartbreaking backstory, where we finally see how she, Nojiko, and Bellemere became a family and how Arlong’s invasion destroyed their peaceful life.

Nojiko Starts Telling Nami’s Past

After Episode 34, Nojiko sits with Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp and begins to explain why Nami works for Arlong. She says that years ago, during a war, she found a crying infant—Nami—on a battlefield while she herself was just a child.

A young Marine at the time, Bellemere, discovered both of them wounded and starving. Bellemere decided to save them instead of returning to her unit, taking the two girls back with her. That decision changed all three of their lives.

Bellemere Adopts Nami And Nojiko

Nojiko explains that Bellemere eventually left the Marines and settled in Cocoyashi Village, raising Nami and Nojiko on a small tangerine farm on the outskirts of town. They were very poor—Bellemere often went hungry herself, eating only mikans so the girls could have proper food.

Nami loved drawing and would often steal books and maps from the local bookstore because they couldn’t afford them, which caused trouble with the villagers. She dreamed of making a map of the entire world, even though their family could barely pay for daily needs.

Despite their poverty, Bellemere treated Nami and Nojiko as her real daughters, giving them her family name and scolding or hugging them like any mother would. Nami, however, sometimes got frustrated by being poor and wearing Nojiko’s hand‑me‑down clothes, and this frustration eventually exploded.

Nami Runs Away After A Fight

One day, Nami and Bellemere have a big argument about money and Nami’s dream. Nami complains about their poor life, says hurtful things, and runs away from home, shouting that she wishes she had been adopted by a richer family.

Heartbroken, Bellemere lets her go for the moment, but she’s still preparing food and worrying about the girls at home. Genzo, the village policeman, finds Nami and explains how Bellemere found both girls in the war and chose to raise them, even though she could barely support herself. This makes Nami realize how much Bellemere actually loves them.

Nami agrees to go back home and make up with Bellemere, and Nojiko rushes with her, hoping they can share a happy meal together again.

Arlong’s Invasion Of Cocoyashi

Just as things seem ready for a family reconciliation, Arlong and his pirates arrive at Cocoyashi Village. Their ship appears offshore, and they march into the village like conquerors.

Arlong declares the entire region his territory and establishes a brutal rule: every adult must pay 100,000 berries per month, and every child 50,000 berries, as “tribute” to stay alive. If anyone cannot pay, they will be killed and their property seized.

The villagers, already poor, are terrified but quickly try to gather money to survive. Meanwhile, the fish-men notice smoke rising from outside the main village and realize there is another house—they head toward Bellemere’s tangerine home.

Bellemere’s Impossible Choice (Cliffhanger Setup)

Nojiko tells the Straw Hats that when she and Nami see Arlong’s men go toward their house, they panic. Bellemere barely has enough money to pay tribute for one person, not three.

They try to get Bellemere to pretend she lives alone so she can survive and the girls can hide, but Bellemere’s love for her daughters won’t let her abandon them, not even on paper. The episode ends by building up to Bellemere’s fateful decision when Arlong’s crew reaches the house and discovers signs of extra people—setting up Episode 36, where her choice and Nami’s desperate bargain with Arlong are fully revealed.
