Zoro The Dojo Challenger

On the Going Merry, Luffy and Usopp find a box of cannonballs and start “testing” the ship’s cannon by firing at a distant rock, while Zoro naps on deck. As he sleeps, we jump back to his past: young Zoro was a dojoyaburi, a kid who went around challenging different dojos to prove his strength. He arrives at Koushirou’s dojo with bundles of wooden swords (shinai) in both hands and in his mouth, asking to fight the strongest person there.

Instead of an adult, the master sends out his daughter Kuina, a girl his age but already far more skilled. Zoro tries to overwhelm her with sheer number of shinai, but she calmly cuts through his attacks and defeats him easily; by their agreement, he has to join the dojo as a student, starting a long-running rivalry.

2000 Losses To Kuina

Zoro throws himself into training, working far harder than the other students. Before long, he can beat the grown men in the dojo, yet no matter how many times he and Kuina fight, he never wins against her. By the time they reach their 2000th match, his record is still 0–2000, and the loss crushes him because all his effort hasn’t closed the gap.

That night, angry and desperate, Zoro challenges Kuina again—this time with real swords instead of wooden ones. Even in a serious duel with actual blades, she defeats him cleanly. Instead of gloating, Kuina breaks down and admits that she’s terrified her talent won’t matter because she’s a girl and will eventually be overtaken in strength as they grow up.

The Promise Between Zoro And Kuina

Kuina explains that she overheard her father saying a woman could never become a truly great swordsman or inherit the dojo, which shattered her confidence. Zoro gets furious—not at her, but at the idea that gender should decide skill—telling her that right now she is stronger than him and that’s the only thing that matters.

Together, they make a solemn vow: they will both keep training as hard as they can, and one of them will become the world’s greatest swordsman. They promise not to blame their bodies, age, or gender—only effort and strength will decide who reaches the top.

Kuina’s Death And Wado Ichimonji

The very next day, everything collapses: Zoro learns that Kuina has died after falling down the stairs at her home, an almost absurdly mundane accident. He is devastated and enraged that their promise could be erased by something so random and unfair, insisting their dream can’t end like that.

Koushirou, who is grieving as both a father and a teacher, gives Zoro Kuina’s treasured white‑hilted katana, Wado Ichimonji. He entrusts her sword and her dream to Zoro, and the boy swears that since Kuina can no longer chase their goal, he will become the world’s greatest swordsman for both of them.

Three Swords, One Goal

After Kuina’s death, Zoro’s training intensifies even more. He incorporates Wado Ichimonji into a new three‑sword style—two swords in his hands and Kuina’s blade clenched in his mouth—so that her memory is literally part of every technique he uses. Years later, he leaves the dojo and becomes a pirate hunter, traveling the seas with one clear objective: keep that promise by surpassing every swordsman in the world.

Back in the present, Zoro wakes from his nap as Luffy’s test shot from the cannon accidentally hits the rock where bounty hunters Johnny and Yosaku are resting. Johnny boards the Going Merry furious, thinking they tried to kill his partner, which sets Zoro and the crew on a collision course with their next destination: the floating restaurant Baratie and the next stage of their adventure.
