One Piece Episode 9: The Honorable Liar – Usopp’s First Stand

New Island, New “Captain”

Episode 9, “The Honorable Liar? Captain Usopp!”, begins the Syrup Village arc as Luffy, Zoro and Nami arrive at a peaceful village looking for a real ship to sail toward the Grand Line. There they meet Usopp, a long-nosed boy who runs through town every morning shouting “Pirates are coming!” even when it’s a lie, earning a reputation as the village liar.

Usopp, Kaya And Storytelling

Usopp is not just a clown; he spends time visiting Kaya, a rich but sick girl living alone in a big mansion after losing her parents. He tells her wild, fake adventure stories to make her smile, and even though they are lies, they are his way of protecting her heart from loneliness.

Clash With Klahadore (Kuro)

Kaya’s butler, Klahadore, appears polite and refined but secretly looks down on Usopp and the poor villagers. When he insults Usopp’s father Yasopp—who left to be a pirate—Usopp gets furious and punches him, but ends up being rejected and humiliated in front of the mansion.

Luffy Learns Usopp’s Connection To Shanks

Luffy discovers that Usopp is the son of Yasopp, the sharpshooter from Shanks’ Red-Haired Pirates, which instantly makes Luffy feel connected to him. Luffy, Zoro and Nami decide they should ask Kaya for a ship, and Luffy launches them over the mansion wall with his rubber powers to get past the guarded gate.

Kuro’s Real Plan Is Revealed

Later, Usopp sneaks near a cliff and overhears Klahadore secretly talking with a hypnotist named Jango. He learns that “Klahadore” is actually the infamous pirate Captain Kuro and that he has spent years pretending to be a butler so he can eventually kill Kaya and steal her fortune using a planned pirate attack.

A Liar No One Believes

Usopp sprints back to the village and desperately warns everyone that pirates are really coming and that Kaya is in danger. Because he has lied so many times before, nobody believes him; the villagers laugh it off as just another fake alarm from the boy who always cries “pirates”.

The Honorable Liar Stands Up

Even when he tries to warn Kaya directly about Kuro, she cannot believe him and he is pushed away again, looking like a liar in front of the person he cares about most. As the sun sets, Usopp admits to himself that he is a liar—but says he truly loves the village and Kaya, so even if no one believes him, he will stand alone to fight the real pirates, until Luffy, Zoro and Nami decide to stand beside him and help protect Syrup Village.
