Life In Foosha Village
As a kid in Foosha Village, Luffy spends his days watching Shanks’ Red-Haired Pirates drink, joke and relax in the local bar, completely different from the scary pirates people usually talk about. Luffy adores Shanks and keeps begging to join his crew, but Shanks just laughs and says Luffy is too young and the sea is too dangerous for him for now.
The Devil Fruit Mistake
Trying to prove he is brave, Luffy stabs himself under the eye as a child to show he is not scared, but the pirates just laugh and worry about him instead. Later, Luffy angrily eats a strange purple fruit from a chest—without knowing it is the Gomu Gomu no Mi Devil Fruit—and his body becomes rubber, meaning he will never be able to swim again.
Shanks’ Sacrifice Against The Sea King
Trouble comes when the mountain bandit Higuma humiliates Shanks in the bar, then later kidnaps Luffy and throws him into the sea after mocking him for being a “rubber boy”. A huge Sea King appears, ready to eat Luffy, but Shanks arrives just in time, saves him, and loses his left arm to the monster, still smiling and telling Luffy that he is just glad his friend is alive.
The Promise And The Straw Hat’s Meaning
Before leaving Foosha Village for good, Shanks kneels down and gently places his straw hat on Luffy’s head, asking him to return it once he becomes a great pirate. That promise turns the straw hat into Luffy’s most precious treasure and the symbol of his dream, explaining why he protects it with his life and why becoming Pirate King is about honoring Shanks’ faith in him.
Toward Orange Town And Nami
Back in the present, Luffy and Zoro continue drifting on the sea, heading toward a new island and their next adventure. At the same time, a clever thief named Nami is shown tricking Buggy’s pirates and stealing their treasure and boat, setting up the meeting between Luffy, Zoro, Nami and the start of the Orange Town arc.
