One Piece Episode 13, titled “The Terrifying Duo! Nyaban Brothers vs. Zoro!”, pushes the Syrup Village battle to a new level as Jango powers up the Black Cat Pirates and unleashes the Nyaban Brothers on an already injured Zoro. At the same time, Kaya finally learns the truth about Kuro and walks toward the battlefield, raising the emotional stakes of the fight.
Kaya Discovers Kuro’s Betrayal
While the fighting continues at the north slope, the Usopp Pirates go to Kaya’s mansion, trying to use Usopp’s secret forest entrance, but find it blocked and can’t get inside. Inside the mansion, Kaya wakes up and leaves her room, only to find Merry lying on the floor, severely wounded by Kuro. Merry tells her that Usopp was telling the truth all along: Klahadore is actually Captain Kuro of the Black Cat Pirates, planning to kill her and steal her inheritance.
Shocked, Kaya runs out of the mansion to search for Kuro, heading toward the north slope, while the three kids secretly follow her, worried but determined to protect her. This begins to connect the emotional storyline in the mansion with the life-or-death battle happening on the coast.
Jango Hypnotizes The Crew (And Luffy)
On the slope, the Straw Hats and Usopp seem to be doing well at first, having taken down many of the basic Black Cat Pirates. Desperate not to fail Kuro, Jango uses his hypnosis on his own crew, convincing them their wounds are healed and that they are super strong, which actually boosts their physical power. One pirate even smashes part of the cliff wall with one arm, showing just how crazed and empowered they have become.
However, the hypnosis also catches Luffy by accident, and he becomes overcharged too. In his boosted state, Luffy wrecks the pirates with a flurry of attacks and even tears the figurehead off their ship before Jango quickly hypnotizes him again, putting him to sleep. The giant figurehead then crashes down on Luffy, pinning him and temporarily removing him from the fight right when his strength is needed most.
Nyaban Brothers Enter The Battle
With his regular crew beaten and Luffy trapped, Jango calls in Kuro’s last trump card: the Nyaban Brothers, Sham and Buchi. These two cat-like fighters step out from the ship and at first act cowardly, pretending to be scared of Zoro and refusing to attack him, which is all part of their trick.
When Zoro lets his guard down for a moment, Sham suddenly lunges forward, lands the first strike, and steals two of Zoro’s swords, throwing them away so he is forced to fight with only one katana. From there, the brothers use fast, tag-team techniques on the uphill slope, making it extremely hard for Zoro to counter, especially since his fighting style relies on three swords, not one.
Zoro Protects Usopp And Nami
Despite his disadvantage, Zoro still tries to push back against the Nyaban Brothers, blocking their combined attacks as best he can. Usopp, feeling guilty and desperate to help, decides to shoot one of the brothers with his slingshot, hoping to create an opening for Zoro.
At the last second, Zoro moves into the shot on purpose and takes the hit himself, shocking Usopp and Nami. Zoro then yells at them, explaining that if they become active attackers, the Nyaban Brothers will target them instead, and since he is already down two swords, he cannot protect them properly if they get dragged into close combat. This moment shows Zoro’s sense of responsibility: he would rather take extra damage himself than let his weaker crew mates become targets.
Nami Injured Trying To Help
Seeing Zoro’s two swords lying away from him, Nami decides she has to do something and runs forward to retrieve them so he can return to fighting at full strength. But as she moves, Jango spots her and throws his ring-shaped chakram, slashing Nami across the side/shoulder and knocking her down in pain. Even the pirates are surprised at how ruthless he is toward someone who is clearly not a front-line fighter.
Now the situation looks bad: Luffy is unconscious under the ship’s figurehead, Zoro is bleeding and still missing his blades, Nami is wounded, and Usopp is too weak for direct melee combat. The only advantage they have left is Zoro’s sheer willpower and his refusal to stay down.
Kuro Appears On The Slope
As the battle gets more chaotic, Kuro finally arrives at the top of the north slope and looks down over the scene. Dawn has already passed, his schedule is delayed, and he is visibly furious that his crew has been held back by “a bunch of kids.”
His appearance sends a wave of fear through the Black Cat Pirates, because they know Kuro will not hesitate to kill his own men for failure. For the Straw Hats and Usopp, this is the first time they see the real Captain Kuro standing in full pirate mode on the battlefield, which clearly signals that the next part of the fight will be even more dangerous.
Why Episode 13 Matters
Episode 13 isn’t just a random fight episode; it deepens several character arcs at once. Zoro shows his protective side, proving he is not just a swordsman chasing his dream, but also a leader willing to shield weaker allies even when he is injured and handicapped. Usopp continues to grow from village liar to real pirate, desperately trying to help despite being badly outclassed in strength.
Kaya’s discovery of Kuro’s true nature turns her from a sheltered, sick girl into someone who walks toward danger for answers and justice. With Kuro now on the battlefield, Episode 13 sets up the coming confrontations: Zoro vs. the Nyaban Brothers to regain his full strength, Usopp and the kids protecting Kaya, and Luffy’s eventual return to face Kuro head‑on and decide the fate of Syrup Village.
